Costa Rica is globally recognized as a premier surfing destination, boasting warm water, incredible biodiversity, and over 300 days of rideable waves a year. Mission Intel: Finding Uncrowded Waves in Costa Rica

Zone 01: Guanacaste (North Pacific)

Guanacaste is the heart of the Costa Rican surf scene, famous for offshore “Papagayo” winds that groom the waves between December and April. It houses everything from bustling surf towns to remote national park breaks, making it highly versatile for any surf trip.

Tamarindo (Playa Tamarindo)

Beach Break | Beginner / Int.

Widely considered the best beginner surf spot in Costa Rica. It features consistent, fun peaks and serves as a bustling basecamp town with excellent nightlife, logistics, and surf schools.

Witch’s Rock (Roca Bruja)

Beach Break | Advanced

A legendary wave inside Santa Rosa National Park. Known for offshore groomed perfection and fast, hollow rights. Access is typically via a boat strike mission from Playas del Coco.

Playa Grande & Avellanas

Beach & Reef Breaks | Intermediate+

Playa Grande offers consistent beach breaks just north of Tamarindo. To the south, Avellanas (known as ‘Little Hawaii’) features five different reefs and sand breaks providing world-class setups.

Zone 02: Nicoya Peninsula

The Nicoya Peninsula offers a rugged, jungle-meets-ocean vibe. It’s a massive swell magnet and a hotspot for digital nomads and wellness retreats, providing some of the most consistent surf in Central America.

Santa Teresa & Mal Pais

Beach Break | Intermediate+

A booming surf town with punchy, hollow beach breaks. Santa Teresa is ideal for intermediate to advanced riders looking for fast waves and a vibrant, off-the-grid atmosphere.

Nosara (Playa Guiones)

Beach Break | Beginner / Int.

The ultimate yoga and surf haven in Costa Rica. Playa Guiones is highly consistent and provides long, mellow rides perfect for longboarders and those looking to progress their skills.

Extended Recon: The Ultimate Costa Rica Surfing Guide

Zone 03: Central & South Pacific

This massive stretch of lush coastline picks up long-period southwest swells heavily from May to November (the green season), producing some of the heaviest and longest waves in the country.

Jaco & Playa Hermosa

Beach Breaks | All Levels

Jaco is the closest major beach to San Jose, offering learner-friendly waves. Just south, Playa Hermosa delivers heavy, steep, world-class barrels strictly for advanced surfers.

Pavones

Point Break | Advanced

Located deep in the southern Pacific near Panama, Pavones boasts one of the longest left-hand point breaks in the world. When a big South swell hits, rides can last over a minute.

Dominical

Rivermouth | Intermediate+

A heavy, extremely consistent rivermouth break surrounded by tropical jungle. Dominical holds serious size and is a favorite for thrill-seekers hunting deep barrels.

Zone 04: The Caribbean Coast

Costa Rica’s Caribbean side runs on a different season entirely (best from December to March) and offers a distinctly Afro-Caribbean culture alongside heavy, tropical reef-breaking waves.

Salsa Brava (Puerto Viejo)

Reef Break | Advanced

Known as the heaviest wave in Costa Rica. Salsa Brava is a fast, powerful, and dangerous tube that breaks directly over a shallow, sharp coral reef. Experts only.

Playa Cocles

Beach Break | Beginner / Int.

Just south of Puerto Viejo, Cocles offers punchy beach break waves that are much more forgiving than Salsa Brava, making it a popular spot for lessons and progression.
