Playa Guiones, Zone by Zone

Guiones is a sandbottom beach break, which means its best peaks genuinely shift after every swell rather than staying fixed in one spot — but surfers who know the beach well tend to describe it in three general zones.

The north zone, closest to the estuary, is the first stretch most people hit walking down from the main part of town. At 2–4 feet, this is genuinely an ideal intermediate wave: enough push to work on real turns, without the wave turning unpredictable the way it can at the more powerful spots further along this list.

Playa Pelada

South of Guiones and noticeably quieter, Pelada trades a bit of Guiones’ consistency for more power — a mix of left and right reef sections rather than pure sand bottom. It’s best around mid-tide, and it’s a genuinely good step up once you’ve spent a few sessions at Guiones and want something with more push. One practical note: the bottom here is rockier than Guiones, so keep that in mind on lower tides or if you’re still finding your footing.

Playa Nosara & the Approach to Ostional

North of Guiones, the coastline gets noticeably more serious. This stretch — sometimes called Playa Nosara, blending into the protected coastline that leads to Ostional — picks up a strong NW swell in dry season and still works on the dominant SW swell through green season, meaning it’s rarely completely flat.

At high tide it turns hollow and walled-up, with long, fast rides for anyone who can find the right position — genuinely advanced territory, not a spot to wander into as your first Nosara session. There are also a handful of left-hand reef setups here that come alive on smaller swells if the main peak isn’t cooperating.

Playa Garza

A short drive south of Nosara proper, Garza works best on a low-to-mid tide and is worth the trip mainly for what’s offshore: a handful of quality point breaks reachable by boat, peeling off the cliffs around the bay. The most notable is a right-hand point breaking about 500 yards out — cruisy on smaller days, with heavier slabs available further out for anyone chasing something gnarlier. It’s genuinely intermediate-to-advanced terrain, and since it’s boat-access only, the peaks stay close to empty even when Guiones is packed.
